How does sales tax work if I sell on Amazon through Shopify?

Selling on Amazon US while managing your products through Shopify is a popular way to scale your eCommerce business. Because Amazon is a marketplace and Shopify is a standalone platform, the way sales tax is handled depends on how your orders are imported into Printify.

While Printify has a direct integration with Amazon US, many merchants prefer to use Shopify as a middleman. Various solutions are available on the Shopify App Store that enable the integration of Amazon orders into a Shopify store. The most popular apps include:

As Amazon is registered as a marketplace facilitator in the majority of states and is required to collect and remit sales taxes on behalf of its sellers, sales tax will be charged when a customer purchases on Amazon.

TTo prevent a double charge, orders imported into Printify from Amazon, using one of the apps listed above, will be automatically exempt from sales tax charges.

Note

The following order types do not qualify for sales tax exemption: orders imported from Amazon via API, CSV imports, Order Desk, and manual orders.
