Which product categories are subject to sales tax?
Sales tax rules vary by state, and different product categories may be treated differently depending on local regulations. In many states, clothing is considered a taxable item. However, several states treat clothing as a basic need and either exempt it entirely or only tax it above a certain price threshold. These states are:
- Minnesota
- New Jersey
- New York
- Pennsylvania
- Rhode Island
- Vermont

Outside of clothing, most other Printify product categories are taxable. Shipping costs may also be taxable in many states, depending on where the order is delivered. Some states treat shipping as part of the total purchase price, while others do not. Check your state’s specific rules to understand whether shipping charges contribute to the taxable amount.
Manual, bulk, and sample orders are taxed the same way as standard orders, unless you’ve provided a valid resale certificate for the destination state. In that case, these orders may be exempt.
