What is sales tax?
Sales tax is a consumption tax applied to the sale of most (but not all) goods and services to the end customer. Unlike federal taxes, sales tax is administered at both the state and local levels.
It is typically calculated as a percentage of the purchase price and added to the final cost of the product or service.
Taxes charged on retail purchases are collected by the seller and remitted to the state government.
Note
Orders are subject to sales tax in two cases: when shipped within the US or when imported to the US.
Since sales tax is regulated at the state level, regulations can vary from one state to another.
