How can I request a GTIN/UPC exemption from Amazon US?
Since Printify products don’t have unique product identifiers like GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) or UPC (Universal Product Code), and we currently do not support adding purchased GTIN numbers to your listings, you will need to request a GTIN/UPC exemption to publish and sell your products on Amazon. The process is quick and easy; just follow the steps below.
Step 1: Navigate to your Amazon account
In your Amazon account, navigate to Catalog → Add Products, select “Blank form”, and then click Start.
Step 2: Add product identity information
Fill in the “Item Name” field with the product name, such as “Leaf Print Tough Phone Case”. The system will automatically suggest the product type based on the entered name. You can either confirm the suggested type or click Select other if you believe the suggestion does not fit.
Next, fill in the “Product Identity” tab. Ensure to check the boxes next to “This product does not have a brand name” and “I don’t have a product ID”. Then, click Next.
If an exemption is required for your product, a pop-up will appear indicating that the GTIN/UPC exemption has been approved. Simply click Acknowledge, and you’re done!
There are some product categories for which an exemption may not be necessary. If you follow the process described above and the pop-up doesn’t appear, but instead you see the product listing page on Amazon (see the image below), it means that an exemption is not required. In that case, you can quit the process on Amazon and proceed with publishing your product from Printify as usual.
You can view your GTIN/UPC exemption applications by navigating to Catalog → View Selling Applications in your Amazon account.
If you’d like to use any specific brand (e.g., Adidas, Gildan, Comfort Colors) in your listing, you will also need to apply for brand approval. Once you have your exemptions ready, you can move on to connecting your Amazon US store to Printify.
